Last week we went up to Morristown to see our Seeing Eye® puppy, Walnut, and her trainer, Shannon. It was a moment every puppy raiser looks forward to with a mixture of hope, joy, and poignancy.
Walnut , together with Shannon, demonstrated all the things she learned since she left our house for her formal training at The Seeing Eye®. Our beautiful chocolate Labrador retriever can now guide a person around obstacles and keep her safe from traffic. She let Shannon know when she reached a curb so she wouldn’t trip over it and she moved her back when a turning truck came too close. We were so impressed. Sad too, because now that she’s getting ready to complete her training and function as a guide dog for a blind person, we know we won’t see her again.
